Talking about Google Talk and Skype
Google is widening its scope again, a few days ago it presented a desktop sidebar, now it announced a brand new instant messenger – Google Talk. They have also included the possibility to take voice calls.
Google Talk is really bad news for Skype. Although, Google Talk does not have the features that make money for Skye (i.e. Skype out), it is just a matter of time when these services are included also in Talk. Yes, Skype has some edge, they were the first in the market, but Google has enormous amount of money. And Google has "Google". That's why Google Talk will probably get more downloads in the first day than some other applications during their lifetime.
If Rupert Murdoch's $3 billion offer for Skype was not a rumour, I think Skype's venture capitalists lost their best opportunity to sell it.

I am no expert but at the moment GOOG Talk is lousy and rather rudimentary and has nothing on Skype. In addition, it is limited to GOOG email users as are many things announced lately with a huge buzz. (And yes, I realize that quite a w folks now have GOOG email. GOOG still cannot handle email and let anyone who wants to get their email address to sign up, fo goodness sake. I think too many are gooogo gagaga over GOOG and overlooking some serious limitations of the company. It seems that it is GOOG that is under pressure and not the other way around spitting out Talk that does not even have smiley faces. JMHO

I agree that Talk can't compete with Skype at the moment. Not until it includes a service comparable with SkypeOut.
But someone has commented the smilies, winks & etc like this:

I hate talking to someone and being flooded by a bunch of smiley faces jumping around and making faces at me or some stupid animations coming out of nowhere."
So, there are two sides... Ones like every kind of colorful fun features and other don't. The same goes for GMail. Very plain, but then very convenient to use.
And what comes to the limitation to GMail users... It's enough if even only 1 person in a coterie has a gmail address. This person can send invitations to 50 contacts + there are a lot of gmail invitation spoolers around, so no one should say that it's impossible to get gmail account. And when I compare gmail's 2.5 GIGAbytes to 1 or 2 MEGAbytes of Hotmail... I see a lot of people moving away from MSN.
Another thing is that Google Talk uses Jabber protocol, so any freeware IM client can handle it (Trillian, Gaim, ...).

It does seem that I am not alone. Like I said in my earlier post, even though I have been a lonely voice it seems, I am not impressed with GOOG products of late. Like I said my feeling is that it is GOOG that is under pressure.
OK, I get your point. If you say that Google shares are over priced, I totally agree (you should find some post in the archive were I have written about it).
I was rather talking about the venture capitalists of Skype. I think they missed their best opportunity to sell Skype. I am not saying that Google Talk beats Skype, not at all. But it adds competition. And if Google adds TalkOut (like SkypeOut) to their product, it probably starts to lower revenues Skype is receiving from their services.
We agree on the GOOG overpriced part but we both know that does not mean much.
The Skype point you made is interesting and bears watching, even though as an avid user of Skype I am not conviced that GOOG has done any damage to them yet.
Skype is used a lot in Europe and as I have many friends there it has been great for me. Chat; for those of my friends who do not like to type much, calls from computer to computer for free and those older folks in my family I can call for peanuts computer to phone. Besides there is a great dual cordless phone for Skype which has been available in Europe for a long time but has as yet to show up here. I was told June, then July, now August. You get the picture.

Anyone tried this Skype program yet for free telephone calls over the internet? A guy at work uses it all the time and because he signed all his friends and relatives up he saves a fortune on his calls. Might be worth a go.
